Having chosen CHEER as our Charity of the Year, we are delighted to support an organisation that makes such a positive difference to older people across the Elmbridge community.
For more than 70 years, CHEER has been helping local residents live more connected, confident and dignified lives. Their dedicated staff and volunteers provide friendship, practical support and advice to people who may otherwise feel lonely or isolated.
One of CHEER’s most valued services is befriending, where volunteers offer regular visits or phone calls to older residents. Sometimes, simply having someone to chat with over a cup of tea can make a huge difference. Last year alone, CHEER provided more than 5,000 hours of befriending support, helping to reduce loneliness and build meaningful friendships.
CHEER also offers expert benefits advice, helping older people access financial support they may not realise they are entitled to. In the past year, the charity helped secure more than £300,000 in benefits for local residents, improving financial wellbeing and peace of mind.
Alongside this, CHEER organises social events, outings and weekly Parkinson’s sessions that bring people together for companionship, exercise and mutual support. Their work creates a real sense of belonging and community.
As members of the WI, we know how important friendship, kindness and community spirit can be. By supporting CHEER this year, we are helping ensure that older people in Elmbridge feel valued, supported and never alone.
